Experience the power of public education.
Welcome to the Harris Elementary Website! As the new principal at Harris Elementary School, it is with great honor and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year. I am looking forward to a successful school year, and collaborating with a staff that is committed, parents who are dedicated and a community that supports high expectations for student achievement.
Prior to joining the Harris community, I was privileged to serve as the principal of Tolleson Elementary and Assistant Principal at Jacksonville Middle School. Prior to that, I served as District Test Coordinator and Literacy Coach in the Pine Bluff School District. My service to education also includes time well spent at the Arkansas Department of Education in the areas of Curriculum and Assessment, and in the Division of Public School Accountability. I will forever be a teacher and was blessed to teach for eight years in the Little Rock School District. I currently hold administrator licenses for Building Administrator grades Pre-K through twelve and Curriculum Specialist (K-12). My teacher certifications include Elementary (Gr.1-6), Social Studies (Gr. 5-12) and Assistant Principal (Pre-K-12).
As we start our most rewarding year ever, I want to remind you that our mission is to empower scholars through technology and research-based strategies to attain academic success.
Harris Elementary School has a 1:1 (student to device) initiative allowing students to participate in relevant and engaging educational experiences. Our instructional program includes integrated technology embedded seamlessly within the curriculum through the use of iPads, Smart Boards, Chromebooks, classroom student computer stations, and labs. Kindergarten through fifth-grade students participate in several internet based skill software programs including the Accelerated Reader program used as an enrichment activity to build comprehension and vocabulary skills. Raz-Kids which encourages reading practice while improving comprehension, and can be accessed at school or home. The STAR Reading Assessment designed to evaluate students’ individual reading progress. In addition to Reflex Math, an adaptive computer game that promotes math fact fluency.
A school with a rich history, Harris Elementary can best be described as a welcoming and caring neighborhood school located in the heart of McAlmont. Once known as Pulaski County Training School, the facility originally served high school students. In 1963 the school was renamed Harris High School in honor of Viola Harris a former administrator. With the desegregation of schools in Arkansas, Harris High School closed in 1970 and reopened as Harris Elementary School. Today Harris Elementary proudly serves nearly 300 students in Pre-K through 5th grade.
